イングランドで16世期頃から伝承された曲だという。 美しい歌のように風が吹き抜けて緑が流れていくようなイメージ。『グリーンスリーブス Greensleeves』は、エリザベス朝時代（16世紀後半頃）によく歌われてた古いイングランド民謡。シェイクスピアの劇中でも言及されている。「スリーブ sleeves」とは衣服の袖（そで）のこと。つまり曲名は「緑の袖」の意味になるが、ここではある女性の名前として用いられているようだ。
