4年前、夜中に「ハッ」と目が覚めてTVをつけたら、ちょうどにラグビー・ワールドカップJapan vs South Africa最後の場面。日本チームが優勝候補の南ア相手の最後の攻撃でペナルティ・ゴールではなく勇敢にもスクラムを選択し、その後奇跡のTryを決め、勝利した瞬間を見た。その試合は「World Cup史上最大の番狂わせ」と言われた。でも、今年9/28、日本開催のWorld Cupで日本人のほとんど全員が（もちろん私も）負けると思っていた世界1,2を争う優勝候補のIrelandを破った！

Japan have been praised for a “seismic” win over Ireland, which is expected to “ignite” the Rugby World Cup.

It built on a nervy opening-day victory against Russia for the hosts, who now top Pool A and are aiming to make the quarter-finals for the first time.
Former Ireland wing Denis Hickie said: “For the host nation to beat the number one ranked team and to win this early on, it will ignite the tournament.”
Japan coach Jamie Joseph said his team were “obviously ecstatic about the result”.
The New Zealander said his side had been “preparing for three years” so “we felt like had an advantage”.
“You’ve just got to be careful before the game. You don’t want to come across too arrogant and cocky,” he added.
“We obviously had a lot of belief in our gameplan and in what we wanted to do. We knew how good Ireland were and how strong they were.”

The result comes four years after Japan famously shocked the rugby world by beating two-time world champions South Africa at the 2015 World Cup. That 34-32 success was dubbed the “Miracle of Brighton” after Japan slid over for an injury-time winning try.
But despite growing enthusiasm for rugby in the country, few would have expected the hosts to repeat the trick against an Ireland side who came into the tournament as the world’s top-ranked team, although went into the match in second behind the All Blacks after their win over South Africa.
Japan also had to recover from trailing at half-time on Saturday, just the second time in 24 attempts they have fought back to win after behind at the break at a World Cup, with the other occasion the win over the Springboks four years ago.
***********Japan’s stand-in captain Pieter Labuschagne told BBC Radio 5 Live. “We backed ourselves going into this game. That was a great game [against South Africa], but we came into this tournament with a new goal and knew what we wanted to do.
“We are really happy. It is difficult to put it into words but I’m proud of every man and it was a great team effort.”
It was the first time Ireland have lost to a non-tier one nation at the World Cup, with Japan, who had never previously beaten the Irish, having now won five of their last six matches at the tournament.
**********Japan’s win is ‘so massive’
Former Australia international Matt Giteau, who now plays for Japanese side Suntory Sungoliath, said the win was “so massive for the World Cup”, while former Ireland wing Shane Horgan said it was “no fluke”.
Horgan added on BBC Radio 5 Live: “This tournament needed a second-tier nation to beat a first-tier nation and this was no fluke – they thoroughly deserved it, [they] out-played Ireland.”
Denis Hickie said: “It’s a huge country and rugby is not anywhere near the top sport, so it’s perfect timing.”
Ben Ryan, who coached Fiji to Olympic sevens gold, said it was a “seismic” win, and that he was impressed by Japan’s approach to the game.
“This was textbook from Japan – any young kids watching who want to see how to tackle properly should watch this Japan team,” he said.
Ireland coach Joe Schmidt said: “Congratulations to Japan. What a furious and intense effort it was. We knew it was potentially coming. They are a tremendous side and did really well.”
************Can Japan reach the knockout stages?
Many thought Pool A would be a battle between Ireland and Scotland to see who would face either New Zealand or South Africa in the quarter-finals.
But with two wins from two, it is Japan who top the group and have set a platform to reach the last eight for the first time.
Hickie said the group was now “wide open”, with ex-Scotland scrum-half Rory Lawson in agreement.
“Japan had the pressure of being hosts in their first game, but tonight they showed they are the real deal and mean business in this tournament,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Their goal of making the quarter-finals is not just a whim. They deserved the win and have blown that group wide open.”
However, with games against Samoa and Scotland still to come, the Brave Blossoms will need to continue their winning form if they are to set up a mouth-watering match with either the All Blacks or another meeting with South Africa in the last eight, while bonus points could play a key part in who progresses.
Ireland should bounce back against Russia next time out, but no side has ever won the World Cup having lost a game in the tournament.
Hickie said: “We saw a situation last time when Japan won three games and didn’t progress. They have their destiny in their hands and Ireland will have to hope Japan and Scotland drop some points.”
Horgan added: “We have an absolute stonker for the last game of this group, Japan versus Scotland. The whole world will be watching, which is exactly what you want at a World Cup.”

英国のBBCは「日本の衝撃の勝利は『ラグビー・ワールドカップの熱狂に火をつけるだろう』」との見出しを取って「ラグビー・ワールドカップを盛り上げることに火をつける効果が期待された日本は、アイルランドへの『地震のような』（衝撃的な）勝利で称賛を浴びた」と伝え、記事の中で複数のラグビー関係者の声を紹介した。

　元オーストラリア代表で、現在は、日本のサントリー・サンゴリアスでプレーするマット・ギタウ氏は、「この勝利は、とても重要なもの」と語り、元アイルランド代表のウィングだったシェーン・ホーガン氏は「決してまぐれではない。この大会では、第2グループの国が第1グループを破ることが必要で、これはまぐれではない。日本の勝利は、完全な勝利でありアイルランドを上回った」とコメントした。

　元アイルランド代表のデニス・ヒッキー氏は、「ラグビーがトップスポーツに及んでいなかった国にとって。とても完璧なタイミング（での勝利）だった」とコメント。7人制ラグビーで、フィジーを指揮して五輪で金メダルを獲得したベン・ライアン氏は、「『地震のような』勝利。試合に向けての日本のアプローチが素晴らしかった。これは日本からの教材だ。正確なタックルをどのようにするかを子供たちが見たければ、この日本チームを見るべき」と、日本の技術を絶賛するコメントを残している。

　日本がどこまで快進撃を続けるのか。今後の戦いも海外メディアは続けてフォローしていきそうだ。

小泉進次郎環境相の発言要旨

小泉進次郎環境相がニューヨークで開かれた国連気候行動サミットで、「気候変動問題に取り組むことはきっとセクシーでしょう」と英語で述べ、国内外で波紋を呼んだ。セクシーという言葉は、政治家として適切だったのか。

一部SNSやメディアでは「小泉進次郎環境大臣が気候変動問題をセクシーに扱うべき」として、話題をさらっています。いくつかのメディアやSNSでは、誤解があったと記事を書き換えているところもあるようですので、誤解も減っているようです。（誤解なく伝えているメディアももちろんあります）ではなぜ上記のように発言に誤解があったのでしょうか。 なぜ誤解されたのでしょうか。

「sexyに」気候変動問題を・・・進次郎大臣の真意は？

1. sexyが問題というよりは

そもそもsexyには「性的な、セクシーな」という意味のほかに、口語でexcitingとかappealingといった意味で使われることもあります。例えば、オックスフォード米語辞典（2nd edition)にある例としては、I’ve climbed most of the really sexy west coast mountains. （試訳：本当に魅力的な西海岸のほぼすべての山に登ったことはあります）のように使われます。またロングマン現代英英辞典（5th edition)の例には、one of the sexiest companies in Seattle（試訳：シアトルでもっとも話題の会社の一つ）があります。このような意味もあるので、小泉氏も「魅力的な」といった意味で使ったのでしょう。そもそも文脈からすると、女性の言葉の引用のようです。（2.の英文をご覧ください。sheと言っています）
（加筆：twitterでご親切な方が、その女性とはChristiana Figueresで、Christiana氏は”Let’s make green sexy”の提唱者であると教えてくださいました。つまりその言葉を引用してsexyといったわけです。）以下がそのビデオです。

さらに以下のビデオを見ると、Christiana Figueresさんが隣にいるので、指をさしてsheと言っていますが、sheではなく、sheという代名詞よりはDr. Figueres（ProfessorならProfessorの方が好ましい）の方が誤解を与えません。大臣として重要なのは、話し手である二人（小泉大臣とFigueres氏の二人）あるいはその場にいた人のみがわかっていればよいということではなく、それが記事になった際に、誤解を与えないようにするかに気を配ることではないかと個人的には思っています。したがって、現在、メディアやSNSなどで、「性的な」「セクシーな」と小泉氏が発言したことに注目するのは少し問題の論点がずれています。

2. 実際の小泉大臣の使用例


実際に小泉氏が使った文脈は以下の通りです。音声から書き起こしたので、少し違うところもあるかもしれませんが、ご容赦ください。誤解をしたメディアの一部は、５文目の　On tackling such～からしか記事にしていないものも午後に見たところ散見されました。On tackling on this issue, everything gonna be fun. And she added also ‘sexy.’ I totally agree with that. 
In politics there are so many issues, sometimes boring. On tackling such a big-scale issue like climate change, it gonna be fun, it gonna be cool, it gonna be sexy, too. （試訳：このような問題を解決するとき、すべては面白くないといけません。彼女は「セクシー」にねとも言いました。政治においてはたくさんの問題がありますが、時々それは退屈なものもあります。気候変動のような大きな問題を解決するにあたって、その問題は面白く、かっこよく、sexyでなければなりません）

On tackling on this issue, everything gonna be fun. And she added also ‘sexy.’ I totally agree with that. 
In politics there are so many issues, sometimes boring. On tackling such a big-scale issue like climate change, it gonna be fun, it gonna be cool, it gonna be sexy, too. （試訳：このような問題を解決するとき、すべては面白くないといけません。彼女は「セクシー」にねとも言いました。政治においてはたくさんの問題がありますが、時々それは退屈なものもあります。気候変動のような大きな問題を解決するにあたって、その問題は面白く、かっこよく、sexyでなければなりません）

※On tacklingではなく、In tacklingが文脈上、正しいでしょう。On~ingは「～するとすぐに」、In ~ingは「～するとき、～する（した）際に」。※on this issueではなく、onは不要。他動詞のため。※it gonna beではなく、it’s gonna beが正しい。※gonnaではなく、gotta be(=got to be)と言いたいのだと思いますし、一部ではそのように伝わっていますが、音声を聞くと発音がgonnaになっています。

では、なぜ「魅力的な」と小泉氏が言いたかったのが、誤解を招いて、世界のメディアの一部が話題にしたかというと、小泉氏のitがclimate changeを指してしまっている（と考えられる）ので（本来はsolution of climate changeと言いたかったのでしょうが）、「気候変動はsexyであるべきだ」と誤解されてしまったのです。言いたかったのは、「気候変動問題解決をsexy（＝appealing）にすべきだ」ということでしょう。それでも前後関係や背景などがわからない人にとっては？？？なのです。また、そもそもitが何を指しているのかも不明なのも誤解された要因でしょう。その結果、言葉が一部でひとり歩きしてしまったというわけです。

またsexyを「引用」としたかったのであれば、英語圏では両手の人差し指と中指で ”    “というジェスチャーをするのです。しかしそれがなかったこと、あるいはso-calledといった語がなかったことから誤解されてしまったのです。あるいは、sexyの後に、as Dr.（ProfessorならProfessorのが好ましい）Figueres called のように言えばよかったのです。

今回の問題はsexyという語の誤用云々というよりも、世界の一部のメディアから内容が誤解されてしまったことが問題なのです。小泉氏が言いたいことは、おそらく　　　　　　　　In politics, there are so many issues, sometimes boring. In tackling such a big-scale issue such as climate change, what we can do is to tackle the issues properly. However,  to solve the environment issues together is sometimes fun, cool and appealing or so-called “sexy” , so we should solve our issues together. 
（試訳：政治においてたくさんの問題があり、時々それは退屈です。気候変動のような大きな問題を解決するにあたり、私たちができることはその問題を適切に解決するということです。しかし、環境問題をともに解決することは、時として楽しく、かっこよく、魅力的なこと、言い換えればsexyでもあるので、我々の問題をともに解決しましょう）ではなかったかと推察します。ただ、なんせ言葉が足りないので、補うのも難しいのです。つまり、「言葉を補うのが難しい」ということは、「言いたいことがよくわからない」という結論が導かれてしまいます。ここが今回の問題なのです。

3. 今後の課題

しかし、今回の問題は言葉の選択が誤解を与えたか否かというだけの問題ではありません。むしろ小泉大臣の大臣としての危うさと脆さを露見したことに注目すべきではないかと思うのです。小泉大臣は今回、映像で（０’５９～）「英語は絶対話せなきゃだめだと思います。通訳がいるってだけで、もうあの場では勝負にならない。国連の中での存在感を発揮していくということが見せられたと思います」と述べています。

確かに「英語ができる大臣」は”sexy”（「魅力的」という意味で）です。（ただし、個人的にはsexyという語をこのように使うのは好みません。なぜなら、もともとは「性的な意味で魅力的」という意味なわけで、アメリカでは口語で使いますが、イギリス人はあまり使いません。このような差があるだけでも国際舞台での使用は誤解を与える危険性があるので避けたいところです）

しかし、口語過ぎる英語、誤解されるような英語を話すならば、やはりプロの通訳者を使うべきではないかと個人的には思っています。私自身も通訳者をしていたことがありますが（と言っても駆け出しです）、通訳者は（特に大臣を担当する通訳者は）相当な訓練を受けているので、インフォーマルな場では通訳者がいなくても問題はありませんが、フォーマルな場ではぜひプロの通訳者を使ってほしいと思います。

学生であれば、間違ってもよいからどんどん話しなさいというところではありますが、小泉氏は「大臣」なのです。したがって、「国連というフォーマルな場で英語を話せば勝負できる」とか「勝ちか負けか」とかという問題ではなく、母国語（母語）でもよいので、言語のプロである通訳者に訳してもらう、あるいは、誤解されないような英語力を身に着けることが重要ではないかと思います。

つまり、国の代表として行っている場なので、自分の勝負の場ではないですし、個人的に勝負をかける場ではないということを心に留めておく必要があるのではないかと個人的には思っています。やはり大臣なのですから、フォーマルな場で（少なくともテレビクルーが入っているような場で）gonna（gotta）とかlikeとかといった口語的すぎる言葉のチョイスは、避けるべきだと考えます。

追記：もちろんどのように気候変動問題に取り組むかという内容が重要ですが。

このジョンソン氏、ある意味でとても「興味深い人物」です。以前、CNN English Express2017年2月号のp47にジョンソンの「話し方のテクニック」の項目で、「経歴と話し方の特徴」を書かせていただきましたが、この人物、本当に「不思議」なのです。CNN ENGLISH EXPRESS (イングリッシュ・エクスプレス) 2017年 02月号 [雑誌]CNN English Express編朝日出版社2017-01-06

「イギリスのトランプ」と一部では言われますが、トランプ大統領よりはかなりの「やり手」「策略家」とみた方がよいでしょう。その根拠は、ジョンソンが選ぶ「発音」に見ることができます。

1. 略歴
その前に、まず経歴を見てみましょう。お父様は欧州議員で、先祖にもそうそうたる面々がいます。その中にはジョージ２世もいるなど貴族に連なる血筋もある家系で、ニューヨークで誕生します。その後、イギリスにもどり、イートン校からオックスフォード大学ベリオール・カレッジを卒業でしています。この経歴だけを見ても、イギリスの「エリート」の典型であることがわかります。ちなみにイートン校とは名門のパブリックスクール（私立中等高等学校）の１つで、これまでにも１９人の首相を輩出するトップ校です。ジョンソンは２０人目にカウントされます。卒業生の中には、４度首相になったグラッドストンや、大英帝国をさらに拡大することに貢献したといわれるセシル、最近で言うとデイビッド・キャメロンもいます。また政治の分野にとどまらず、「オトラント城奇譚」を書いたホレス・ウォルポール、ロマン派の詩人として知られるシェリー、「ケインズ経済学」で知られるケインズもこちらの出身です。したがって、世界の歴史に一役買う人物を多数輩出している学校であることがわかります。それから、ウィリアム王子など王族、貴族の御用達の学校として知られます。

次にジョンソンが通ったオックスフォード大学ベルリオール・カレッジも名門大学として名高いところです。よくオックスフォード大学出身というと、「すごい！」と単純に捉えがちですが、イギリスでは「どこのカレッジの出身か」ということも重要な意味を持ちます。しかし、このベルリオール・カレッジは雅子皇后も一時期留学なさったことがあり、ノーベル賞受賞者、３人の首相を輩出する名門カレッジなのです。政治経済学者として世界的に知られるアダム・スミス、現在のミクロ経済学・マクロ経済の発展に貢献したヒックスがここの出身と聞けば、いかに名門カレッジかがわかるでしょう。このようにジョンソンは「エリート」なのです。しかし、発音にそれが表れていないのが興味深いところです。

2. 発音
イギリスでは２１世紀になった現在でも、発音からその人の階級や出自がわかるといわれます。最近ではその傾向が薄まったとはいえ、ジョンソンの経歴や年齢（５５歳であること）を考えると、いわゆる典型的なイギリス英語「容認発音（Received Pronunciation、RP）」で話すのが通常です。同年代で、イートン校出身で、カレッジは違うものの同じオックスフォード大学出身のデイビッド・キャメロン元首相はRPを話します。しかし、ジョンソンは典型的なRPではなく、むしろカジュアルなイギリス英語を話します。

昨日の勝利宣言は少々フォーマルな英語で話していたことは興味深い点ではあります。俗な言い方をすれば「ボリスもきちんとした英語が話せるのね」といった感じですが、それでも従来の英国首相が話す英語発音ではない点に注目したいところです。普段、イギリスのエリートが使う典型的なイギリス英語RPで話していないところに、ジョンソンの「賢さ」が表れています。これはどういうことでしょうか。

3. ジョンソンの策略？
ドナルド・トランプがアメリカの大統領に就任したのは「ポピュリズム」の蔓延ゆえと言われています。今回、イギリスの首相にボリス・ジョンソンが就任したのも、この「ポピュリズム」ゆえでしょう。つまり、現在、大国の長に就くには「大衆」に推される必要があるのです。
それを考慮すると、今やイギリスの３％しかRP話者がいないとされる中で、エリート臭のする発音で国民に語り掛けることが有利に働かなくなっています。こうしたことがイギリスで実際に起きたことは、ある意味でイギリスという国が大きな転換期にあることがわかります。なぜなら、言語における変化は、すなわち文化の変容を意味し、これはそうそうに起きることではないからです。その意味で、ジョンソンがRPではなく大衆的な発音で話すこと、エリート臭を感じさせないモップのようなヘアスタイルやファッションセンスは、イギリスの大衆に親近感を与えるのです。この対応に失敗したのが、前首相のメイ氏でしょう。前メイ首相の評判が悪かったのは、やはりオックスフォード大学出でRPを話すことから、一般の受けしなかったことも大きな要因と言えます。イギリス人の中には「メイ首相はsnobである」という声も多く聞かれるのはそういった事情もあるのです。実際には、ジョンソン氏とメイ氏を比較すると、メイ氏はグラマースクール（公立学校）出身であることからも、ジョンソン氏の方が圧倒的に「エリート」であることを忘れてはいけません。

ところで、発音というのは、「環境」に大きく影響を受けます。ということは、ジョンソン氏の周りは、経歴から見るよりもはるかに「大衆」が多いことがうかがえます。この周りの「大衆」が今後の首相としての働きに、「吉」と出るのか「凶」と出るのか、見守る必要があります。まずは、BREXITをどう処理するのかが見ものです。本人はtwitterの中で「１０月に完全離脱」と明言していますが、大きな困難が待ち受けていることは言うまでもありません。

Keats (1795–1821) had come to Winchester in the late summer from the Isle of Wight where he had gone to work on poems and his verse play Otho. He was attracted by the city’s medieval ambience — and the need for a reference library.
Walks to the countryside, ‘an hour before dinner’, from his lodging house near Winchester Cathedral (the building where he stayed is long gone), became his evening custom.
‘How beautiful the season is now — How fine the air,’ he wrote. ‘A temperate sharpness about it … I never lik’d stubble fields so much as now … Somehow a stubble plain looks warm — in the same way that some pictures look warm — this struck me so much in my Sunday’s walk that I composed upon it.’
‘To Autumn’, drafted that evening, was included, after some revisions, in Keats’s 1820 collection entitled Lamia, Isabella, the Eve of St Agnes and Other Poems. It was the last in a series of six great odes that Keats produced during 1819 and, indeed, the last major poem he wrote in his short life, effectively ending his career.
Marking the writing of ‘To Autumn’ focuses our attention on the odes, in this their anniversary year, and I discuss them in a follow-up essay (‘Celebrating the bicentenary of the great odes…’) for they assured Keats of his place in the pantheon of English poetry.

強い台風15号がなんとこの横浜を横断した！大学構内では銀杏の枝が折れ、ギンナンがまだ小さく青いのに大量に落ちてしまった。時計台の横のヒマラヤスギが根元から折れて倒れ、理学研究等の入り口は1か所通行止めとなった。図書館前の私の大好きなアメリカディゴも太い枝をそがれていた。大変なことだった。体育館の前も水があふれ水たまりが池になっており、今日は一日中水が引かなかった。

大船植物園は好き。花や樹木にネームプレートが付いているから。1年ほど前、鎌倉の家に咲いたカンパニューラの名前がわからずにFaceBookにアップしたらオランダのモニクから「あら、それってどこにでもあるカンパニューラじゃない！」と言われてうれしかった、そんなこともあるけど、スマホのアプリで1秒も経たないうちに、瞬時に（同じことか）名前がわかるのスッバラシイ！9/6の大発見だった。大学の構内、帰り道、家の周り、室内、全部撮ってみた。

でも、その前に私の大好きな樹の画像を！

土曜日のコーラスのあと、風が吹く平潟湾沿いの花畑を友人と歩いた。ひまわり、コスモス、女郎花、桔梗、薔薇、百日草、母が好きだったヘリオトロープ・・・など。もう、秋の花も咲いている。

お花が好きで、志とお時間がある人がていねいに手入れをしているのがわかる・・。ありがたいことだ。

大学構内に「ひまわりの花が満開です！舞岡キャンパス・木原生物学研究所圃場にお越しください 」・・・こんな張り紙と、大きなひまわりが・・・。

花瓶と壁のしわ(?)は気にしないで！！

守衛室にきれいなひまわりが咲いている。猛暑で歩くのも嫌なのだけど、黄色い大輪の花に惹かれて出どころを訊いて行ってみると、地域貢献センターの入り口付近に「ご自由にどうぞ」と投げ込みのひまわりが‟咲いて”いた。さっそく事務室に飾ってみた。そういえば、ずっと昔「禁止」されて以来、お花を飾ったことはほとんどなかった。

夏休み期間中の静けさのなか、しごともややゆっくり。猛暑のあとに雨が降ったり、少しずつ秋の趣も感じられるこの頃だ。

Ianさんが FaceBookのカバー写真を変更した。Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau さんとの若いころの写真だ。ディースカウさんが日本での公演の時のステージで、コンサートマスターと握手をする場面をTVで見ていたら、指揮台の指揮者と舞台に立ってるバイオリニストぐらいの身長の差があった。Ianさんの写真でもどちらが背が高いのか、微妙な感じ。だから「Ianさんよりあちら様の方が背が高かったのでしょうか？」とお尋ねしたら「No…..」とのお返事が！！これでお返事をもらったのは回目。来日が待ち遠しい。
