アリア：語源は空気や雰囲気を表すラテン語aer。アリアとエアは区別されるように（大井駿）

「シンプルなメロディの曲」を1つの言葉だけで表すにはあまりにも違いが出てくるようになりました。ここでアリアは2つに分かれます。

(1) オペラ内で演奏される曲や、単独で書かれた作品はアリア（aria／イタリア語）もしくはアリエ（Arie／ドイツ語）、

(2) 組曲内の簡単な伴奏にシンプルなメロディが乗った曲はエア（air／英語・ドイツ語）と呼ばれるようになります。ちなみにフランスではどれもエール（air／フランス語）。すべて語源は同じです。……ややこしいですね！やはり、これらが混同されることもあるようです。

例えばバッハの管弦楽組曲第3番、《G線上のアリア》として親しまれている第2曲。シンプルなメロディにシンプルな伴奏ですよね。曲調も落ち着いています。これはリュートなどのシンプルな楽器で伴奏されるスタイルから派生したエア（もしくはエール）に分類されます。では、同じバッハの《ゴルドベルク変奏曲》の主題はなぜアリア？ それは、単独で書かれた作品だからです。言葉の変遷から見てみると、同じアリアでもここまで奥深いのです。

「今後これ以上うまくEv’ry Valleyを歌うことは無理」と思った。リハーサルでは響いたのに舞台で歌いだしたとき自分の声の響きが聞きとれず不安になった。でもとにかく舞台に立ったら歌うしかない！その時の緊張と不安の中の不思議な楽しさ。とても複雑。そしてやっぱり歌は楽しい。

「漁師の歌 D881（Fischerweise D881）」
1826年3月に作曲された曲で詩はシューベルトの友人であるシュレヒタの作。各４行６連から成る詩で、１，２連では朝早い船出の情景３，４連では水上の楽しい生活、５、６連では漁師の心意気が軽やかに歌われる。
