少し遠出して栃木県那須町の「日本一」のカタクリの里を歩きました。でもカタクリの里としては相模原に負けてました！それに代わって思いがけずきれいでかわいくて感動したのはイワウチワ。山の急な斜面に一面に咲いていました。
雪割草や、初めて見た「ネコメソウ」、里山の菜の花、さくら、辛夷など、見渡す限り花いっぱいの日本です。

Walked around the hills and mountains to see the “spring.” I enjoyed the sceneries with wild flowers. These were “iwauchiwa” or shotia, “katakuri”or dogtooth violet and “mizubasho” or skunk cabbage. I’m so embarrassed by their English names, as we call them with very beautiful Japanese words!
<Sally> Lovely photos, Akemi. True, the English names aren’t pretty, but their names are descriptive of their leaves. (I looked this up.) For instance the skunk cabbage is named that because when the leaves are crushed, they give off a bad smell. Still, I’d rather have something else about them reflected in their names! We’ll be seeing these in the next month or so.
Hello Sally, thank you so much for your comment. I think your naming is scientific/academic and our is more intuitive(?) I think the closer answer is these Japanese names are in “yamato kotoba,” (old Japanese). So they are named before science age! It is interesting to know why it was called “something.” I liked your answer very much, thank you, and hope you can see spring flowers very soon

バーモントの春は知らない。いつもAnnからの手紙で想像し、私の遠い思い出と重ねる。きっと、ずいぶん寒くて、シーンと静かで、でも清々しいに違いない。
これは今朝届いた2018年のバーモントの春の情景。ここに留めることにしよう。
Spring is coming slowly, we still have a lot of snow and ice around, this is a late spring.
The days are getting longer, the snow is crystallizing, still white and deep with sharp edges near places where snow melt happens, like along the brooks and streams.
Inside, we have pussy willows in glass vases, daffodils and crab apple twigs/branches that I am trying to force.
The birds, chickadees and robins are active in our yard. On walks, I see cardinals, some quite young.
These are the birds I am more interested in, I’ll not mention the common birds that annoy me, the crows mostly.
Pigeons aren’t that bad, I do like their cooing sounds.

今年、今のところ皆勤賞(?)のGTTイベント。今回はレンタカーなど5台に分乗しての快適フェリー＆ドライブでした。
鋸山の大仏様を拝んだあと、室町後里見氏が権勢をふるった南房総市へ。本田忠勝居城の大多喜城までいきました。大多喜町は小江戸川越を思い起こさせる古い街並みや家が多く残る美しい町でした。今年の桜は例年より1週間早まり、もう見ごろのところもあるようですが、大多喜は６分咲きぐらいでした。鋸山の山すそにはタチツボスミレた薮椿などが美しく咲いていました。

ベランダのプランターでフリージアが咲いた。その日に玄関に飾ったお花も・・・。桜が咲き始めたというのに珍しくかなり本格的な雪が降った寒い日。歌の練習4時間ぐらい, 英語の調べもの2時間ぐらい（STEM とSTEAMの違いなど）その合間にランチ、ディナー。昨日買った甲州のワインがおいしかった。

今年もいつものように文系研究棟の庭に黄色の水仙が咲き、アカシアの木の下にハナニラが咲く。思いがけず長くなった私の仕事も、これで最後の春かと思いつつ6年目を迎えることになった。平穏で楽しい。

春の午後、田浦梅林へ。山が紅梅・白梅で霞のように染まっていた。桃源郷のような美しい景色。

今年も2月はお誕生日会の月。Simon, Sarahと私の誕生日会。場所はいつもの、池袋のとあるレストラン。Simon, Mariはスマイル・ゼミにハマりっぱなし。でも、朝は早起き（親の目が届かない唯一の時間）、勉強ばっちり、なかなかのものだ。
三省堂で孫たちにプレゼントの本を買い、コーヒーパックのお土産をもらい、そのあとはルーフトップ庭園でお菓子とお茶タイム。かなり風もあり、ウソみたいに寒かったけど、楽しかった！！歌を歌ったり、遊具で遊んだり、リラックス。なんて楽しい！家族はいいな。Sarahさんたちも立派な家族だ！
